Sony CEO dismisses Chip Development Rumors
As it was expected, Sony's rumored plans to develop an application processor for its mobile devices in house were unbased, considering Sony's recent decisions related to its business focus. Speaking to Chinese website dc.pconline.com.cn, Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai has shot down the rumors that claimed the company was planning to develop its in-house mobile SoCs for use on its Xperia smartphones.
Hirai also reiterated that Sony is committed to the smartphone business and has no current plans of selling its mobile division.
Sony’s Xperia smartphone business has been struggling and the company's focus remains its image sensor business.
Last month, the Wall Street Journal had reported thjat Sony could even sell its mobile division in case it fails to generate any profits by next year.
