Sony DADC presents new formats for the music industry

Sony DADC presents new formats for the music industry

General Interest Jan 20,2003 0

Sony DADC, Europe's largest replicator of CDs and DVDs, presents the promising new formats Music DVD-Video and Super Audio CD at this year's international music trade show MIDEM in Cannes, France (January 19-23). Another major topic will be the company's innovative solutions to counter the slump in music CD sales due mainly to mass home copying. Currently, more than 800 independent music labels are profiting from the solutions created by Sony DADC. With the highest quality, unrivalled service levels and a spirit of ongoing innovation, the company clearly distinguishes itself from other suppliers. In a highly competitive market, it has proven to be a valuable partner to the music industry. To create new revenue opportunities for its clients, Sony DADC focuses on developing upgrades for CDs, such as copy control and value-added offers for original CDs, as well as on the increasingly popular formats Music DVD-Video and Super Audio CD.

"There is no doubt that Music DVD-Video and Super Audio CD will be successful in the future", says Johannes Stegfellner, Director Marketing and Sales at Sony DADC. "The high sound quality and special audio-visual possibilities, such as concert recordings in home cinema surround sound, open up completely new dimensions for music labels as well as for consumers."

What's more, Sony DADC's production technology can make these formats attractive to music consumers in exciting new ways. Special varieties like the ColourDVD (where one of six bright colours can be chosen for the polycarbonate of the disc), the MiniDVD (8cm diameter, with a storage capacity of 1.46 GB) or the Sniffle DVD (which allows one of 95 different scents to be applied to the disc) provide music labels with unique possibilities for producing individually and creatively designed Music DVD titles.

Although the Super Audio CD market is not yet mature, Sony DADC expects the yearly demand in Western Europe to rise to more than 100 million units by 2006. The format, which was introduced in 1999 as a successor for CD-Audio, already enjoys great popularity: more than 2.5 million SACD players have been purchased by households worldwide and over 1,000 SACD titles have already been published.

Sony DADC also devotes significant research and development effort to well-established formats like CD-Audio, opening up new profit channels for its customers with innovations such as key2audioXS. The most recent copy control solution benefits from the experience of more than 100 million protected CDs produced to date. key2audioXS not only gives music labels an effective Digital Rights Management solution with PC Playback, but also offers innovative Internet-based marketing tools like bonus content download, consumer profiling or e-commerce.

In addition to excelling at its core business, Sony DADC breaks new grounds for its customers with innovative solutions in the field of e-business. Music labels of all sizes already use the company's multifaceted services for online archiving, management and distribution of digital content such as music, pictures and videos. Sony DADC has made approximately one million music titles available to its customers within a 900 Terrabyte Digital Archive. This facilitates the automated conversion of music titles into Internet formats, enables online and mobile content distribution and strongly supports the development of new business models for the entertainment industry.
