Magellan Introduces CrossoverGPS for Auto and Outdoor Navigation in One
Powerful and Versatile, the Magellan RoadMate 2000, 2200T and 2500T Meet a Variety of Navigation Needs With Street and Topo Maps, IPX-4 Water Resistance, Best-in-Class Battery Life, and More
Magellan, creators of the Hertz(R) NeverLost(R) and a leading global innovator of outdoor and vehicle navigation solutions, announced today the introduction of the Magellan RoadMate 2000 series of three small, powerful and affordable portable vehicle navigation devices. The series includes the Magellan RoadMate 2000, and the traffic-ready 2200T and 2500T, the world's first rugged, IPX-4-waterproof, CrossoverGPS designed to provide navigation for both driving and outdoor adventures off road, on foot and on water.
Similar to the Magellan RoadMate 2500T, the Magellan RoadMate 2200T is the first rugged, expandable, advanced IPX4-waterproof car nav system under $500 that is upgradeable to provide outdoor navigation and real-time traffic capabilities. The Magellan RoadMate 2000 is the first pocket-sized, durable and powerful car navigation device available from Magellan at under $400. Measuring 3.4 x 4.3 x 1.1 with an integrated battery and antenna, all three devices provide voice and visual turn-by-turn guidance with a 3.5 inch color touch-screen display for easy viewing of the 3-D birds-eye map screen.
"Whether traveling on road or off road, people need to feel certain of their location and destination, and now they can carry one navigation device that meets both needs," said Christian Bubenheim, general manager of the Magellan consumer business. "With the Magellan RoadMate 2000 series, we're delivering a new type of navigation solution that enhances any travel situation with a flexibility not found anywhere else on the market."
To ensure every driver has the opportunity to experience premium auto navigation without a premium price, the Magellan RoadMate 2000 delivers powerful auto navigation in a sleek, compact design with SiRFstarIII for the highest level of GPS accuracy at just $399. Weighing 7.9 ounces, the Magellan RoadMate 2000 features a new user interface that makes the device simple to operate for even novice navigators. It contains pre-loaded, detailed map coverage of the 48 contiguous states and a searchable database of more than 1.3 million points of interest for finding nearby ATMs, gas stations and other essential businesses. It also offers the fee-free SmartDetour(TM) routing feature to help drivers route around freeway traffic. The integrated battery allows drivers to take it anywhere for extended use without a power cord. The Magellan RoadMate 2000 is available this month, exclusively in the United States, at several retail outlets, including Best Buy, Circuit City, Target and Wal-Mart, among others.
The water-resistant Magellan RoadMate 2200T pioneers the concept of CrossoverGPS with easy upgrade options to add outdoor navigation capabilities for hiking, off-road excursions and more with compatible topographic or marine software applications via optional SD memory cards. It also provides optional access to real-time traffic updates and rerouting capabilities. The Magellan RoadMate 2200T contains full map coverage for the 50 United States, Canada and Puerto Rico along with a searchable directory of almost 2 million points of interest to easily find local restaurants, lodging and more. Weighing 8.5 ounces, the Magellan RoadMate 2200T also features the new user interface for easier navigation, Smart Detour, SayWhere(TM) text-to-speech directions delivering audible street names for extra driving confidence, and optimized multi-destination routing for the quickest and most efficient way to get to all those stops on the schedule. Users can also enjoy the built-in MP3 player and photo viewer in or away from the car with its best-in-class battery life of up to eight hours. The system can also be outfitted with an optional rubberized, impact- and water-resistant Sports Guard(TM) jacket for added durability. The Magellan RoadMate 2200T will be available in North America this October for $499 at RadioShack and other retail outlets.
The Magellan RoadMate 2500T builds on the features found in the Magellan RoadMate 2200T by delivering the first out-of-the-box CrossoverGPS capabilities. It will provide multiple navigation applications with pre-loaded street-level maps for the entire United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, plus pre-loaded topographic contour maps for off-road and outdoor activities so users can create and go to waypoints, plan routes, backtrack, and more. In addition, users can add other compatible outdoor maps, such as marine cartography and navaids, via optional SD memory cards. The Magellan RoadMate 2500T also provides the option to add real-time traffic capabilities and offers an MP3 player and photo viewer. The system weighs 8.5 ounces, has a lanyard hook and ships with a Sports Guard(TM) sleeve for easy gripping and protection on a muddy trail or a drizzly ride in an open vehicle. Available in time for the holidays, the Magellan RoadMate 2500T will be in North American retail outlets this December at $549.
"T" stands for Traffic
Real-time traffic services for the Magellan RoadMate 2500T and 2200T will be available in late 2006. The Magellan TrafficKit(TM) receiver processes real-time traffic information and displays icons on the Magellan RoadMate map screen to show traffic jams and conditions that impede the normal flow of traffic, such as lane reductions, road construction and accidents. Drivers can choose to see all or specific types of incidents, and can learn details about each by touching the associated icon on the screen. Drivers can also choose to automatically be rerouted around traffic or to receive traffic alerts for information only.
In Europe, the Magellan RoadMate 2200T will be available in December 2006, and the Magellan RoadMate 2500T will be available in early 2007. European feature sets will vary from those described above.
