Sony TV Internet Module Tunes into YouTube

Sony TV Internet Module Tunes into YouTube

Consumer Electronics Jun 6,2008 0

Sony's latest LCD flat panels are offering access to youtube videos. Sony on Thursday said YouTube and Wired.com have been added to the video providers for a $300 module it sells for its LCD flat panel TVs.

The Internet Video Link module is a small box that fits into the back of some 2007 and 2008 LCD TVs. It connects to the home broadband router and is controlled by the TV remote. Video service comes free with the module.

Yahoo, AOL, Sports Illustrated and Style.com are among existing video providers for the device.

Similarly, Apple's Apple TV set-top box streams YouTube videos to a TV set, but it works with any high-definition set.

Also Thursday, Sony introduced two high-end series of LCD TV with backlighting produced by light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. Both XBR7 and XBR8 series feature a 10-bit panel and 10-bit processing for superior color, contrast, and black-level reproduction.

The XBR8 series includes the 46-inches KDL-46XBR8 and 55-inches KDL-55XBR8 models (measured diagonally) with high frame rate technology Motionflow 120Hz and Bravia Engine 2 Pro. Additionally, the series offers x.v. color technology that boosts video color data range by 1.8 times. It includes LCD TVs with four 1080/60 24p HDMI connections (HDCP), two 1080/60p HD component inputs, a 1080/60p-capable PC input, Ethernet (RJ-45) port, and RS-232C connection.

The XBR7 series includes the 40-inches KDL-40XBR7 and 70-inches KDL-70XBR7 models. The KDL-40XBR7 features Bravia Engine 2 Pro digital video processing while KDL-70XBR7 features Bravia Engine 2 EX. Both models feature high frame rate Motionflow 120 Hz technology and x.v. color technology. The LCD TVs in this series include four 1080/60 24p HDMI connections (HDCP), two 1080/60p component inputs, a 1080/60p PC input, Ethernet (RJ-45) port, and RS-232C connection.

Prices were not announced, but will be lower than the cost of the only previously available Sony model with LED backlighting, a 70-inch model for $33,000.
