ASUS today announced its second-generation PadFone 2, which builds upon the combination of an Android smartphone and dockable tablet. The PadFone 2 is an Android 4.0 smartphone with a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 HD Super IPS+ display with up to 550nits brightness that docks with the PadFone 2 Station to become a 10.1-inch tablet.

The PadFone 2 ispowered by Qualcomm's quad-core 1.5GHz APQ8064 SoC, is equipped with 2GB of RAM and also a new 13-megapixel camera with a wide f/2.4 aperture, made by Sony. The camera supports 1080p at 30fps, 720p at 60fps and up to 100 continuous shots at full resolution. A 1.2-megapixel front camera is also available. The mobile phone supports NFC, has a 2,140mAh battery providing up to 16 hours 3G talk time and supports WCDMA 900/2,100MHz plus LTE 800/1,800/2,600MHz connetivity.



PadFone 2 Station has a 5000mAh battery and extends talk time to up to 36 hours by recharging the PadFone battery at the same time. The combined weight of both PadFone 2 and PadFone 2 Station is just 649g.

A 13-pin connectoris available on both the phone and the tablet that handles all the data, video and radio signals between the PadFone 2 and the new PadFone Station.

The PadFone 2 can be purchased either on its own or together with the PadFone Station.

The device is available in 16,32 and 64GB models, and will be launched throughout Europe and most of Asia in late December. Reports put the price at €799 for the 32 GB PadFone 2 with the PadFone station and €899 for the 64 GB version.
