Osram grants LED license to Lite-On Technology
German lighting company Osram has signed a LED patent cross-license agreement with Lite-On Technology, a leading LED packaging company based in Taipei, Taiwan.
Osram has granted Lite-On a royalty-bearing license to manufacture and sell surface mountable (SMT) LEDs, as well as white LEDs that use phosphor conversion technology. Osram holds patents in these technology areas, and typical applications include backlighting for mobile phone and car radio displays.
In return, Lite-On has granted Osram a patent license for “special manufacturing processes”.
SMT mounting forms are very small and allow for easy further processing in industrial series manufacturing. Osram holds patents for several mounting forms and packages for SMT LEDs.
Conversion technology for LEDs, developed by Osram Opto Semiconductors, enables white LEDs to be produced using blue InGaN chips and a suitable fluorescent converter.
