Acer Sees AI As An Oportunity To Diversify From Computers
Acer is banking on artificial intelligence technology to support long-term growth as it seeks to diversify away from desktops and laptops.
The Taiwanese company is working on commercializing its artificial intelligence (AI) technology and hopes the business will start contributing to revenue in the first half of the year.
"AI and deep learning technologies will be one of Acer's main focuses for long-term development, given their wide range of applications in everyday life," Acer chief executive officer Jason Chen said.
Chen unveiled that Acer is in talks with a local Taiwanese firm to commercialize its AI technology for transportation-related applications, and may work with the government to apply the technology toward easing urban traffic.
The PC business, including desktop and notebook computers, still accounted for 76 percent of Acer's total sales as of the third quarter last year, according to a company filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
