AMD Launches Cloud Gaming Platform

AMD Launches Cloud Gaming Platform

GPUs Mar 27,2013 0

Today at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) AMD unveiled its Unified Gaming Strategy for the gaming market, which includes the AMD Radeon Sky Graphics, the cornerstone of the company's cloud gaming platform. "Real-time gaming through the cloud represents a significant opportunity and AMD is poised to lead in this vertical thanks to our extensive graphics hardware and software capabilities," said David Cummings, senior director, AMD Professional Graphics. "AMD is working closely with CiiNow,G-Cluster, Otoy and Ubitus to deliver exceptional AMD Radeon gaming experiences to the cloud."

By working with CiiNow, G-Cluster, Otoy and Ubitus, AMD has developed a cloud gaming technology and designed a solution that enables game developers and service providers to deliver a content experience to gamers whether it?s through PCs, tablets, Smart TVs or mobile devices. Powering this experience is AMD RapidFire technology, enabling responsive game streaming.

AMD Radeon Sky Series includes the AMD Radeon Sky 900, 700 and 500 models:

The 28nm cards are based on AMD's Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture and support DirectX 11 with features such as Compute Shaders, Direct3D, Multithreaded Rendering and Tessellation. AMD's intelligent power monitoring and management technologies such as AMD PowerTune and AMD ZeroCore Power technology are also supported.

AMD claims that the new Radeon Sky Series graphics card can support up to six HD (720p) game streams each. Each of the six game streams supports up to 30 frames per second. With a focus on minimizing latency over the network, users can play games at HD resolutions (720p) without impacting game performance.

With AMD Radeon Sky Series cloud gaming service providers can maximize existing infrastructure and resources to support even more simultaneous game streams, from casual games up to the most demanding AAA titles.

AMD RapidFire technology is a combination of hardware and software that enables AMD's cloud gaming partners to benefit from an open API that simplifies the manipulation of key hardware controls to provide HD visual quality, minimal latency and optimal network bandwidth. With AMD RapidFire technology, AMD is also building in support for direct access to AMD Radeon Sky GPUs from virtual machines created by hypervisors including VMware ESX/ESXi and Citrix XenServer, providing greater density and more simultaneous game streams from a single server.

GDC also marked the 10th anniversary of the launch of the original iconic AMD "Ruby" demo. To celebrate this milestone, AMD unveiled a sneak peek of its remodeled and reinvented Ruby, which was designed and developed by IllFonic, and harnesses the power of Crytek?s CryEngine 3 development engine. The latest AMD "Ruby" demo is still under production and is designed to highlight real-world gaming possibilities of AMD Radeon graphics technology. It will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

As part of the "Never Settle: Reloaded" bundle, AMD announced the arrival of "BioShock: Infinite." AMD has been working with Irrational Games to deliver DirectX 11 PC-exclusive features such as anti-aliasing, texture detail, texture filtering, dynamic shadows and more.

AMD also teased the Game Developers Conference by showing off the AMD 7990, the "world's fastest graphics card" according to the company. The card features a triple-fan cooler, four mini DisplayPort outputs alongside a single DVI port.
