Apple Enters into Deal Content With Spielberg, NBCUniversal: report

Apple Enters into Deal Content With Spielberg, NBCUniversal: report

Enterprise & IT Oct 10,2017 0

Apple is said to have signed a content deal with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television and NBCUniversal television production business, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The deal involves a 10 episode reboot of "Amazing Stories," a science fiction and horror anthology series that ran on NBC in the 1980s and was created by Spielberg, the WSJ reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

"We love being at the forefront of Apple's investment in scripted programming," NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke told the Deadline website. "And I can't think of a better property than Spielberg's beloved Amazing Stories franchise."

Apple has been looking to create its own original video content, diving deeper into a field crowded by Hollywood studios and online streaming service providers such as Netflix and Amazon.com's Prime Video.

The company in June hired executives Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg from Sony to fill newly created positions that oversee "all aspects of video programming." Two months later, Apple told The Wall Street Journal it would devote up to $1 billion toward original programming for 2018 and produce as many as 10 new shows.

It's still unclear how Apple will release its shows -- or when. But selling media services has taken on a new urgency at the company as sales of iPhones have slowed.

Apple sells the Apple TV, a box that enables customers to watch an array of streaming services, like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. And the company recently released its own app collating TV shows and movies from across the ever-growing constellation of streaming services.
