Blu-Ray members to release two-layer 2X recording standard next summer
The Blu-Ray disk related session was held in CEATEC, Japan, and the
representatives of the related companies revealed the upcoming plans
for the future of Blu-Ray technologies.
Pioneer introduced the present condition of the Blu-Ray disk (BD).
According to the roadmap, plans for next year aim to 2x recording
achievement.
Mitsubishi Electric Corp. explains the basic outline behind the high-density recording technology, applied in the Blu-Ray.
Blu-Ray discs have a very low curvature of 0.1mm, compared to the 0.6mm of a DVD disc. In addition, optimization of the thickness of the protection layer is the key for achieving high-density writing.
Moreover, low power lasers are expected to offer a 2x recording speed, which is currently under development.
The scenario of using non-cartridged Blu-Ray disks is also under development.
Moreover, the standardization of Blu-Ray Disks is in full progress. The physical format was standarized with Ver.1.0 in July 2002, and the new version 1.01 is expected to be applied in July 2004.
