Borland adopts SafeDisc HD copy protection

Borland adopts SafeDisc HD copy protection

General Interest Feb 14,2001 0

"...Macrovision announced today that Borland has signed a three-year license for Macrovision's SafeDisc HD CD-ROM copy protection solution for worldwide software distribution.

Borland will use SafeDisc HD to provide persistent copy protection for its implementation software CD-ROMs sold through retail and reseller channels worldwide. SafeDisc HD is a highly secure, software-based protection solution that combines anti-copy, encryption and anti-hacking technologies to allow installation and subsequent execution of the application only in the presence of the original disc(s) containing a SafeDisc HD Digital Signature. A key feature of SafeDisc HD is that it does not require the CD-ROM in the drive every time the application is launched. The publisher can specify the time duration for periodic re-authentication of the original CD-ROM. This prevents the end-user from passing the original disc(s) on to unauthorized users. Another important feature of SafeDisc HD is the multi-level anti-hacking technology that prevents the compromise of its security features. The anti-hacking technology is designed to not only deter consumer copying, but to also thwart hackers.

SafeDisc HD is Macrovision's second-generation copy protection product designed specifically for the application software market. SafeDisc HD is designed for PC software that launches from the computer's hard drive after installation of the program, in which the publisher does not want to require the respective CD-ROM in the drive every time the program is launched, such as anti-virus, word processing, tax, personal finance or desktop publishing software applications. SafeDisc HD protection is a "wrapper" technology that can be applied after the product development is complete (supports 32-bit PC applications only), thereby making it easy for software publishers to implement since it requires no code changes. Publishers can have the CD-ROMs mastered at any of the 100+ Macrovision-licensed replication facilities worldwide. Users cannot copy the SafeDisc HD protected key disc in a CD-R writer nor can professional pirates copy it at their mastering and replication facilities..." NULL
