Coding Technologies and DTS Debut 5.1 Multi-channel Sound for HDTV Broadcasting

Coding Technologies and DTS Debut 5.1 Multi-channel Sound for HDTV Broadcasting

Consumer Electronics Apr 24,2006 0

Coding Technologies and DTS showcase combines aacPlus/DTS transcoding solution enabling high-quality 5.1 multi-channel sound. The new solution incorporates the highly efficient MPEG-4 aacPlus audio codec with the well known DTS audio technology available in over 50 million DTS-enabled home theater receivers.

The new aacPlus/DTS solution enables broadcasters to profit from the bandwidth saving advantage of the aacPlus audio codec for over-the-air transmission and enables backwards compatibility by transcoding into DTS within the set top box. Independent tests have shown that aacPlus is the most efficient audio codec available today. Specifically for 5.1 surround sound, 160 kbps aacPlus provides the same audio quality as 384 kbps transmissions currently used in ATSC. This gain of efficiency frees up valuable transmission bandwidth, thereby allowing broadcasters to add new video channels, secondary audio, such as multilingual programming to their existing channels, or simply cut down on transmission costs.

"The aacPlus/DTS transcoding solution offers for the first time a real alternative for multi-channel transmissions by enabling instantly the installed base of home theater receivers," said Stefan Meltzer, vice president of business development at Coding Technologies. "Cutting the required bitrate in half opens new opportunities for broadcasters to increase the attractiveness of their offering."

"DTS strongly believes in competition and choice as the critical drivers for the broadcasting market," said Brian Towne, senior vice president consumer/pro division at DTS, Inc. "With our new combined surround sound solution, DTS is enabling manufacturing companies and broadcasters to take advantage of the cost efficiencies inherent in cutting-edge technology like aacPlus."

The aacPlus/DTS solution will be demonstrated at the DVB stand, #C836, throughout the NAB Conference.
