DISCover PC Game Console technology previewed at COMDEX
Digital Interactive Systems Corporation (DISC) previewed its DISCover® PC Game Console(TM) at COMDEX, Las Vegas, in advance of a formal unveiling at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show.
DISCover technology enables consumer electronics firms, PC manufacturers, and VARs to enter the videogame console market with a game console that plays thousands of unmodified PC games. By way of example, Apex Digital intends to launch its own DISCover PC Game Console in January as well.
For consumer electronics firms, DISCover technology represents the only way to enter the lucrative $13 billion gaming industry and the hot-selling console market without having to spend millions to first develop their own proprietary games. By manufacturing and branding DISCover PC Game Consoles, these firms will have immediate access to thousands of existing PC games, including most of the popular titles.
"The success of any game console depends on the number of titles it offers," said Avi DorEl, president of DISC. "The videogame console that offers the most games is always the most popular. Yet even the market leader only offers a limited number of proprietary titles compared to the thousands of PC games available to consoles based on DISCover technology."
Only DISCover hardware and software offer true Drop & Play(TM) capabilities for unmodified PC games. Users simply drop a game CD into a console and start playing. DISCover technology works transparently to automatically configure games for no-hassle convenience. This enables gamers playing on home entertainment systems (including HDTVs) to enjoy a new level of audio and visual excitement.
In addition, DISC intends to work with GameSpy to provide a built-in "GameSpy Arcade," allowing DISCover users to gain access to the world's largest community of online game enthusiasts.
A console that plays PC games requires DISCover's patented technology. Since DISC does not plan to manufacture game consoles itself, it is currently talking to consumer electronics firms, PC manufacturers and VARs who are interested in entering the game console market.
