Google Kills Buzz, Other Products

Enterprise & IT Oct 14,2011 0

Google is getting ready to shut down its Buzz service as well as other projects and products. Google Buzz and the Buzz API will be shut down within the next few weeks, Google said in a Friday blog post. The service is destined to be remembered as Google's botched attempt to build a social networking service to rival Facebook's online hangout. Instead, Google plans to on Google+. While people obviously won't be able to create new posts after that, they will be able to view their existing content on their Google Profile, and download it using Google Takeout, Google added.

On January 15, 2012, Google will also shut down Code Search, which was designed to help people search for open source code all over the web.

Jaiku, a product Google acquired in 2007 that let users send updates to friends, will shut down on January 15, 2012. Google will enable users to export their data from Jaiku.

Several years ago, Google gave people the ability to interact socially on iGoogle. With the company's new focus on Google+, Google will remove iGoogle's social features on January 15, 2012. iGoogle itself, and non-social iGoogle applications, will stay as they are.

The University Research Program for Google Search, which provides API access to Google's search results for a small number of approved academic researchers, will also close on January 15, 2012, Google added.

In addition, later today the Google Labs site will shut down, and Boutiques.com and the former Like.com websites will be replaced by Google Product Search.
