Google is shutting down Stadia in 2023
Google announced that the Stadia cloud gaming service will shut down on January 18, 2023. The company will issue refunds. Just as LG, Samsung and others were starting to position Smart TVs as a way to play the latest and greatest games through streaming apps – no console hardware required – Google has pulled the plug on Stadia.- "A few years ago, we also launched a consumer gaming service, Stadia. And while Stadia's approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technology foundation, it hasn't gained the traction with users that we expected so we’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service," said Phil Harrison, Vice President and General Manager, Google Stadia. Google Stadia was unveiled to great fanfare in 2019 around the same time as Apple Arcade – a gaming service with game downloads. However, the Stadia launch was plagued by issues, limitations and broken promises, and Stadia's tight integration with YouTube was not enough to get it off the ground.
