Intel Expands Atom Processor Line-up for Netbooks

Intel Expands Atom Processor Line-up for Netbooks

PC components Mar 1,2010 0

Today Intel introduced the Intel Atom processor N470. This new, faster Atom processor for netbooks has integrated graphics built directly into the CPU. The single core Atom processor runs at 1.83GHz, with 512k of L2 cache and DDR2-667 support. Intel's previous Atom series (N450) was clocked at 1.66GHz and also had 512k of cache. The new 45nm N470 supports hyper-threading, DDR2-667 memory, features an integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150 GPU and a built-in memory controller. Despite the bump in CPU clock speed, the Atom N470 retains a 5.5W TDP.

Intel's GMA3150 cannot reproduce Blu-ray discs, features Intel's Clear Video HD technology but only for SD videos, while it dows not offering DVD upscaling. This means that the built-in GPU does not offer AVC/H.264 or even VC-1 but just MPEG-2 decoding. It offers a maximun display resolution of 3048 x 1536 or 1400 x 1050, and does not support HDMI/DisplayPort with HDCP. It offers support for up to DirecX 9, Open GL 1.5 and Shader model 3.0.

Intel's OEMs are expected to introduce systems based on this processor over the coming months.
