Japan Display Enhances HDR Image Reproduction With New WhiteMagic LCD With 2D Local Dimming
Japan Display has developed a 10-inch high resolution (2,880 x 1,080 pixels) liquid crystal display (LCD) module, which supports the playback of high dynamic range content, by combining a newly-developed side-lit 2-dimensional (2D) local dimming backlight with its "WhiteMagic" display.
Accurate reproduction of high dynamic range content requires high contrast and high peak brightness. "WhiteMagic" adds a White (W) sub-pixel into a Red/Green/Blue (RGB) LCD panel for enhanced brightness, while a 2D local dimming backlight simultaneously delivers deep black images by controlling the luminosity of each zone with precision, leading to a high-contrast image.
This technology can be applied not only mobile applications for streaming HDR content, but also DSC (digital still camera) and automotive applications which require both readability in sunlight and contrast in shade.
