LG Display Earns Industrys First UL Solutions Eyesafe Verification for TVs and Monitors
LG Display announced today that its entire lineup of OLED panels for TVs and monitors, have earned UL Solutions Eyesafe Verification, meeting Eyesafe® Display Requirements 3.0.
These requirements are developed by Eyesafe, an international authority in blue light management, in collaboration with leading eye care professionals, and verified by a global leader in applied safety science, UL Solutions. The verification confirms that displays maintain color accuracy and reduce blue light emissions.
While previous Eyesafe certifications were based solely on the proportion of blue light emitted by a display in the range of 435-440 nanometers (nm), the new criteria provide a more comprehensive measure for human-friendly displays by including the potential impact of blue light on circadian rhythms, including melatonin secretion, which affects sleep.
To obtain this verification, a display must offer color reproduction of at least 90% based on the DCI-P3 standard, as well as meeting a minimum score of 35 for Circadian Protection Factor (CPF), which assesses the level of blue light emissions at peak wavelengths 480-500 nm, and Radiance Protection Factor (RPF®), which measures the level of blue light emissions at peak wavelengths 435-440 nm.
All OLED panels mass-produced by LG Display have achieved industry-leading scores of CPF 60 and RPF 40, comfortably meeting the Eyesafe Display Requirements 3.0 as verified by UL Solutions. These scores are comparable to screen protection films applied to monitors and mobile phones, demonstrating how far the company has minimized the potential impact of its displays on eye health and sleep.
“UL Solutions’ Marketing Claim Verification process is designed to give consumers confidence in product claims,” said Todd Denison, senior vice president of Global Regions at UL Solutions. “By validating advertising and promotional statements, UL Solutions helps consumers distinguish between verified facts and unsubstantiated claims. This objective, science-driven assessment process that uses Eyesafe requirements is crucial in today’s market, where consumers are increasingly concerned about the potential health effects of prolonged screen time.”
Last year, LG Display demonstrated through a clinical trial with a Kookmin University research team that watching Mini LED TV panels in the evening led to a 2.7% decrease in melatonin secretion among subjects, compared to an 8.1% increase among those watching OLED TVs.
In addition to reducing blue light, the company's OLED TV and monitor panels already gained a reputation for human-friendliness by earning Flicker-Free and Reflection-Free certifications from leading global certification agencies.
"This verification by an objective and reliable institution signifies that we have set a new standard for customers to choose human-friendly displays," said Soo-young Yoon, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display. He added, “LG Display will continue to provide differentiated customer value through our relentless efforts and innovation."
