Lite-On to produce more optical disc drives for Sony
Lite-On is expected to OEM produce more optical disc drives (ODDs) for Sony, which will focus more on producing blue-ray drives, according to Taiwan ODD makers.
Lite-On IT currently has an OEM relationship with Sony to produce half-height (H/H) ODDs and slim-type ODDs, mainly for DVD burners, the makers pointed out.
The Japanese company plans to phase out its production of own brand ODDs and contract more of the production to Lite-On IT, the makers stated. In addition, Sony also OEM manufactures ODDs for other makers, and these orders will be transferred to Lite-On IT, the makers noted.
Although Lite-On IT was not the first Taiwan maker to produce slim-type ODDs, the company is now a technology leader in Taiwan, and currently produces slim-type burners at speeds up to 8x. The company has current monthly shipments of about 400,000 slim-type ODDs, with more than 200,000 being DVD burners and the remainder being Combo drives, according to the company.
