Data CD Reading Tests

- Pressed CD results (Click for CDSpeed results)

The LiteOn LDW-811S drive supports 40x CAV reading speed with CD-ROM/-R. The maximum speed reached was 41.83x on the outer tracks of the disc, with an overall average speed of 31.58x. The results are quite good, although the Cyberdrive DX082D was slightly faster.

On the seek times test, the LiteOn drive returned the slowest times amongst the three drives, especially the full disc seek which was a hefty 200ms, while the random and 1/3 seeks were somewhat better. The Optorite DD0401 was the best performer with 84msec for a random seek.

- CD-R Media results (Click for CDSpeed results)

In the transfer rate test for CDR media, the LiteOn drive returned results very similar to those of the transfer rate test for pressed CDs previously, as was the case with the other two drives. The reading method was CAV, with a start speed of 17.25x, end speed of 41.56x and average of 31.3x. Here too, the LiteOn drive was slightly slower than the CyberDrive.

The seek times for the LiteOn drive were quite slow, a good deal more so than the other two drives. In comparison to the pressed CD seek times, the LiteOn drive's times were markedly up although the random seek time is well within the manufacturer's stated seek time of 140ms. In contrast, the Optorite and CyberDrive drives had marginally faster CDR-Media seek times when compared to pressed CD media.

- ReWritable Media (Click for CDSpeed results)

The LiteOn LDW-811S supports a maximum reading speed of 32x CAV with rewritable media. For the reading test we used 24x High Speed rewritable media from Mitsubishi Chemicals.

The reading speed with CD-RW media was a good deal lower than that with CD-R media. This is again in contrast to the other two drives whose reading times stayed fairly constant regardless of the media type used. The average read time of 25.29x for the LiteOn is quite slow when compared to the 30.65x and 33.08x for the Optorite and CyberDrive drives respectively.
