  • Encounters problems reading the start of the second layer on dual layer DVDs
  • Only at 16x writing speed introduced high jitter spike and high C1 error rate towards the end

The LiteOn LDW-811s is the third recorder from LiteOn and their second dual DVD recorder. Overall, the drive performed satisfactorily, providing good speeds except for the 6x DVD-/+R and RW formats. It generally provided good quality recording, especially with CD-R media, and good error correction capabilities although at 16x writing speed, towards the end of writing, it introduced a surprisingly high jitter spike, and high C1 error rate.

The 6x DVD-/+R, RW reading speed is a little dissapointing, however this is compensated for by fielding some handy features such as overburning up to 99 minutes, backups of SafeDisc, support for 99 minute audio discs, DAE and protected audio CDs, thus making it a versatile drive.

DVD reading was relatively fast, as it also proved to be a fast drive with DVD ripping and recording. The only blemish was with dual layer media where there was a problem when reading the beginning of the second layer.

Performance with CD media wasn't quite as impressive though, and the seek times could certainly have been better here.

Error correction was also another plus for this drive although, in the check level tests, it only managed to read up to the third level. This probably indicates that the drive can and does bypass scratches and defects located on the media's surface, as long as the affected area isn't particularly large.

The drive is very competetively priced at around $150.
