Mitsumi drive is a fast CD reader with also good seek times. Its ability with defected discs depends on the type of defection. It performed well with artificial scratches but not with fingerprints.
As for a DVD reader, Mitsumi was again fast with recordable and pressed media. However with rewritable media we expected to be faster since the average 4.6x is rather low. Thus the seek times should be lower. The drive's DVD error correction ability was better than with CD media, in fact it was great. It managed to playback all of our test disc without reporting any error.
The drive managed to make SafeDisc v3.1 working backups. However the strange is that those backups are not playable in the same drive, DW-7872TE, while are in same other. Apart from this the drive is very fast in ripping process with all the game types we tried.
According to DAE test the drive has a good performance. On the other hand the drive managed to playback and rip Key2Audio but not the CDS200 protected Audio CDs. The drive also can play or rip 99 minutes AudioCDs.
In the CD recording tests the Mitsumi drive performed very good. The supported 40x maximum writing speed is high. Also the writing CD quality is good, especially with Taiyo Yuden media. However we would like the supported media list to be longer. Maybe a firmware upgrade will improve this.
Inspite of the fact that the drive's average recording speed was 6.3x, generally performed good. The PI/PO levels are generally acceptable. However there were some cases that those levels were extremely high.
The drive is currently not yet available in the market. The upcoming price, according to Mitsumi, will be at 169 euro, which is a very high price. We estimate that with a much lower price, since there are 8x dual DVD recorders already available at 100~130 euro, will be a good purchase.
