MPEG LA Expands Blu-ray Disc Patents

MPEG LA Expands Blu-ray Disc Patents

Optical Storage Apr 6,2006 0

MPEG LA, LLC expanded its call for patents essential to the implementation of the Blu-ray Disc Standard to include the System Description Blu-ray Disc Read-Only Format Part 3 Audio Visual Basic Specifications Version 1.0 (January 2006). MPEG LA plans to form a joint patent portfolio license to provide users with fair access to the Blu-ray Disc technology as an alternative to negotiating separate licenses. The inclusion of the Read-Only Format Version 1, Part 3: Audio Visual Basic Specifications is in addition to the other parts of the standard earlier announced.

MPEG LA calls anyone who believes it has patents that are essential to the Standard and wishes to join the Blu-ray Disc Patent Portfolio License to submit them for evaluation by MPEG LA's patent evaluators. While only issued patents that are essential to the Standard will be included in the license, in order to participate in the license development process, patent applications with claims that their owners believe are essential to the Standard and likely to issue in a patent also may be submitted for an evaluation of essentiality.
