NEC Showcases E-Paper Technology at SID 2009

NEC Showcases E-Paper Technology at SID 2009

Enterprise & IT Jun 1,2009 0

NEC Electronics will showcase a new electronic paper (e-paper) module in its booth at the Society for Information Display (SID) Display Week 2009, June 2-4, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. Employing a microcapsule electrophoresis system, the e-paper module provides higher visibility and better grayscale gradation when compared to most printed newspapers. The module leverages NEC LCD Technologies’ proprietary advancements with TFT active-matrix LCDs to secure 16-step grayscale and white reflectivity of 43 percent and a contrast ratio of 10:1.

As is the case with printed newspapers, the e-paper display module utilizes reflected light that allows for wide viewing angles (88o up/down/left/right), reducing viewer eyestrain and providing high visibility even in direct sunlight. In addition, electrical power is required only to update the displayed image; it is not required to maintain the displayed image thus minimizing the display’s power consumption.

Due to the low power consumption combined with the e-paper module’s thin profile and lightweight design, NEC’s e-paper modules can be used in portable equipment in a variety of industrial and consumer display applications that require both small form factors and long battery life. Developed in A3- and A4-equivalent sizes, the 13.8-inch modules, which are equipped with a multi-tiling controller, also can be used to form a large multi-tiled display incorporating up to eight modules.
