New 3DMark Benchmark Coming On February

PC components Jan 31,2013 0

Futuremark's updated 3DMark benchmark for Windows will be released on February 4, with Android, iOS and Windows RT versions to follow soon after pending app store approvals, the company announced today. There will a free Basic Edition on all platforms, a paid Advanced Edition with more options for enthusiasts, and a Professional Edition for business users.

The new 3DMark includes three all new tests you can bench everything from smartphones and tablets, to notebooks and home PCs, to the latest high-end, multi-GPU gaming desktops. With 3DMark you can also compare your scores with Android and iOS devices too.

For components that support it, 3DMark records frames per second (FPS), GPU and CPU temperatures as well as CPU power and clock speed during the benchmark run.

The popular benchmark includes three tests for DirectX 9, DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 hardware.

"Fire Strike" is a new showcase DirectX 11 benchmark designed for high-performance gaming PCs. It features real-time graphics rendered with increased detail and complexity. Fire Strike will be available only in the Windows editions of 3DMark initially.

"Cloud Gate" is a new test that is designed for Windows notebooks and typical home PCs. It includes two graphics tests and a physics test. Cloud Gate uses a DirectX 11 engine limited to Direct3D feature level 10 making it suitable for testing DirectX 10 compatible hardware. Cloud Gate will initially be available only in the Windows editions of 3DMark.

You will be able to use "Ice Storm" to test the performance of your smartphone, tablet, ultra-portable notebook or entry level PC. Ice Storm includes two graphics tests focusing on GPU performance and a physics test for measuring CPU performance. On Windows, Ice Storm uses a DirectX 11 engine limited to Direct3D feature level 9. On Android and iOS, Ice Storm uses OpenGL ES 2.0. You will be able to compare scores across platforms.
