New 700MHz PCI Express GPU by S3

New 700MHz PCI Express GPU by S3

GPUs Nov 4,2005 0

The new Chrome S20 series of GPUs by S3 promises leading performance per watt, core frequencies of up to 700MHz and 8 pixel shader performance. In addition, the chips support multi-GPU configurations. The S20 series is build upon the 90nm manufacturing process technology in cooperation with Fujitsu. The Chrome S20 series has a high speed DirectX 9.0 graphics engine consisting of 4 full precision vertex shader units (32bit?4) and 8 full precision pixel shader units (24bit?4), translating into a 5.6 Billion pixel shader operations per second for Chrome S27. It also offers native support for PCI Express and Shader Model v2.0 +.

Moreover, S3 Graphics' next generation Chromotion 3.0 is at the heart of Chrome 20 series Hi-Def media capabilities. it supports decoding of WMV9, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. HDTV output is natively supported and is ale to display up to one billion colors through with a 400MHz 10bit RAMDAC.

The first two members of the Chrome S20 Series desktop GPU family are the Chrome S27 and the Chrome S25.

The S27 chip operates at a core clock of 700Mhz and supports up to DDR3 memory. The memory bus width is 32/64/128bit, and its maximum bandwidth is 22.4GB/s. Chrome S27 also supports dual graphics implementations with the upcoming MultiChrome technology, a cable-free multi-graphics acceleration technology that enables two or more Chrome S27 cards or GPUs to operate together to provide additional game acceleration on any motherboard with suitable PCIe slots. According to S3, Multicherome supports multiple vendor chipset solutions.

The Chrome 25 brings 8 pixel shader performance to middle and value mainstream segments providing a smart new alternative in these competitive markets. With a 32-bit to 128-bit DDR2 memory interface, Chrome S25 introduces S3Graphics AcceleRAM technology to boost the performance of smaller memory configurations. AcceleRAM allows Chrome S25 to operate with 32-bit or 64-bit wide memory interfaces with local frame buffers consisting of just one or more memory chips. The core clock of Chrome S25 is 600MHz.
