Samsung Demos First 8 Megapixel Camera Phone

Samsung Demos First 8 Megapixel Camera Phone

Smartphones Nov 4,2005 0

Samsung unveiled Thursday the world's first 8.0 megapixel camera phone, the WCDMA SPH-V8200. The new phone was demonstarted by the President of Telecommunications Network of Samsung at the Analyst Day held in Korea. President Lee said, "Increasing the number of pixels while realizing digital camera-quality is a main task of developing handset camera module. The new phone offers image quality of premium digital camera and will be available in domestic (Korean) market in November", he added.

Samsung is the first company to equip a mobile phone with an 8-megapixel camera. The SPH-V8200 is the successor of it's 7.0 megapixel brother, the SCH-V770, showcased at CeBIT Hanover last March.

The Korean company believes that adding more megapixels to its camera sensors would boost its market success, although picture quality does not depend solely on megapixels. For example, placing more megapixels at the same sensor space could result to lower quality performance, since less light would hit each pixel. In addition, parameters like sensitivity are important when you deal with photo shooting. Let's hope that Samsung has considered these parameters and will present a quality product later this November.

Samsung also announced the SGH-i300, a multimedia smartphone equipped with a 3GB hard disk. The device will hit the market next year.

In related news, Sharp announced a 10-megapixel CCD for mobile devices.
