NHK's Super Hi-Vision To Become An International Standard

Consumer Electronics Aug 23,2012 0

Japanese Broadcaster NHK as announced that its Super Hi-Vision standard has been recommended by ITU-R to become an international standard. NHK is airing 8K footage to venues and large screens throughout the UK and Japan. Super Hi-Vision is a Ultra High Definition (UHD) standard capable of both 4K and 8K resolutions at a variety of frame-rates.

The video format was approved earlier this month by member nations of the International Telecommunication Union, according to at NHK, Japan's public broadcasting station, and an official at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

UHD allows for programming and broadcasts at resolutions of up to 7680 by 4320, along with frame refresh rates of up to 120Hz, double that of most current HDTV broadcasts. The format also calls for a broader palette of colors that can be displayed on screen. According to specifications of SHV video for TV broadcasting, the 7,680 x 4,320 (progressive) video is provided in the 16:9 aspect ratio and is available in 120, 60 or 59.94 frames per second (FPS). Gradation is 10,12 Bit/pixel.

NHK has been working on SHV video technology since 2003. Now the Japanese will continue the research and development efforts related to the technology and the fields of SHV broadcasting equipment. It has already run succesful trial broadcasts of the format, and hopes to become a widespread TV format by by 2020.

During the summer Olympics, NHK together with British broadcaster BBC showed parts of the event using the 8k format.

Panasonic and Sharp have also showed large-screen UHDTV sets. Sony and JVC have released 4k projectors.
