Nine major electronics companies announce U.S. launch of the RAM Promotion Group

General Interest Nov 19,2003 0

Nine leading consumer and business technology companies announced the United States launch of the RAM Promotion Group (RAMPRG) during COMDEX 2003 in Las Vegas. This organization was formed to promote awareness and adoption of the DVD-RAM recordable DVD format, and to educate consumers and the industry about its unique benefits. The nine companies -- Hitachi, Ltd., HLDS, Hitachi Maxell, Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic), Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., TEAC Corporation, Toshiba Corporation and Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC) -- have committed to promoting the DVD- RAM format and popularizing DVD-RAM related products on an international basis. The RAMPRG is supported by the Recordable DVD Council (RDVDC), and all of the founding members of the RAMPRG are also members of the RDVDC.

Market indicators strongly point to DVD-RAM as the format of choice for consumer DVD recorders. According to The NPD Group, a leading market information company, DVD-RAM recorders hold a dominant market share, accounting for 59.2 percent of stand-alone consumer recorders sold in the U.S. between January 2001 and September 2003 and 58.9% of those sold in 2003. As the market for recordable DVD grows, the RAMPRG will maintain DVD-RAM's leadership position through education of consumers and manufacturers on the unique benefits of RAM technology.

The RAMPRG will make its initial U.S. appearance during COMDEX 2003 in Las Vegas. Representatives of member companies will be demonstrating a wide variety of DVD-RAM products in the RAMPRG Suite at the Las Vegas Hilton, Suite 571/573, on Monday, Nov. 17, through Wednesday, Nov. 19. Products shown will include: recordable DVD drives for the PC, stand-alone DVD recorders, DVD camcorders, DVD-RAM media, and software to help visitors understand the key advantages of the DVD-RAM format.

The RAMPRG also announced that they will be hosting a DVD-RAM Pavilion at the International CES Show in Las Vegas NV from January 8-11, 2004.

The RAMPRG was launched internationally in August 2003, with its first appearance at the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA 2003), in Berlin, Germany, and then appeared in Tokyo, Japan at CEATEC in October 2003.
