Samsung Display Received Huge OLED Order by Apple

Samsung Display Received Huge OLED Order by Apple

Smartphones Feb 12,2017 0

South Korea's Samsung Display has reportedly received an order by Apple to supply 60 million units of light-emitting diode (OLED) displays for the next-generation iPhones.

According to sources cited by Maeil News Korea, the latest order follows the previous one struck between the two firms last year for Samsung Display to provide Apple 100 million units of 5.5-inch OLED screens worth 8 trillion won ($6.96 billion).

Given that a single iPhone model sells around 200 million units, about a whopping 80 percent of total shipments will be fitted in with Samsung Display's OLED screens.

The deal would position Samsung Display as the chief screen supplier for Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 or iPhone X.

Samsung's rival LG Display, Sharp and Japan Display previously supplied screens to Apple.

South Korea's LG Display was dropped out of the supply chain for Apple and for the first time in 10 years, it may not be supplying panels for the new iPhone.

LG Display did not respond fast to the migration from liquid crystal display to organic light-emitting diode (OLED). The company is an OLED powerhouse in large panels for TVs while Samsung Display is stronger in small OLED panels because it supplies to Samsung Electronics whose premium phones are all OLED screens.
