Samsung To Release Bio Processor Next Year
Samsung Electronics plans to release Bio Processor (BP) system chip for smartwatches next year, the company said on Monday. BP is a component that can constantly monitor various biometric signals such as body temperature, electrocardiogram, heart rate and emotional state on a single chip.
A wearable bracelet equipped with BP can work as an individual’s identification tool as the heart rate has a unique pattern like fingerprints in people. In addition, breathing and stress levels of users can also be visualized with objective data, leading to developing related apps and devices for the healthcare market.
The announcement was made by the company during the Samsung Electronics 2015 Investors Forum held at Ritz Carlton in Singapore.
Samsung’s BP can lower power consumption and chip size by 50 and 80 percent, respectively, compared to the combination of individual chips.
Samsung's semiconductor business is expected to focus on bio-sensors, image-sensors, and mobile system on chip (SoC). The company will expand image-sensors to variety of other areas such as vehicles, robot vacuum cleaners and others and not just on mobiles.
