Toshiba MG10AFA22TE 22TB HDD
4. Conclusion
Having tested the Toshiba MG10 20TB version we expected more or less the 22TB variation to be exactly the same, in terms of performance. Toshiba at the official specssheet didn't mention any performance figures for the 22TB so were left in question, what users should expect from this new drive. Our tests showed that compared with the 20TB variation, the new 22TB Toshiba MG10 drive, delivers lower sequential reading/writing speeds, however higher random writing speeds, which is always a nice improvement, especially if you are dealing with small sized files. In short anything higher than 4k sized file will be read/written with the maximum possible speed.
The Toshiba MG10 HDD series offer 7200rpm rotating speed, CMR recording technology, 10-disk helium-sealed design, Toshiba’s Flux Control Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) technology and 512MB of cache to boost reading/writing speeds. The measured temperatures were very good (open test bed) with 32 Celsius idle and under full load around 39 Celsius, Toshiba MG10 series can work up to 60 Celsius, which of course isn't recommended for longetivity. We didn't measured HDD noise, however did't bothered us much even was working at our tests at 1m from our ears. Remeber this kind of HDD supposed to get installed at a server rack or NAS server with additional air flow and cooling.
Overall we feel the new Toshiba MG10AFA22TE 22TB SATA HDD drive is a solid performer and should be considered when choosing your next Enterprise HDD. The drive will not slow down even when writing big files, has a MTBF of 2.500.000 hours, an annual rate workload of 550TB per year and best of all, its priced lower than other 22TB HDD drives that already are being sold at the market. For that reason it earns our Best Buy Award and we hope in 2024 to see more improvements and innovations are HDD storage market with even higher capacities and lower retail prices.
