Valve SteamOS Beta Available for Download

Valve SteamOS Beta Available for Download

Gaming Dec 14,2013 0

Valve on Friday released the public beta version of its new SteamOS. But have in mind that SteamOS is based on Debian Linux and it is currently compatible with NVIDIA graphics cards only. SteamOS is designed for streaming Windows-based Steam games to secondary computers running the new operating system. It also provides a desktop mode which can run regular Linux applications. SteamOS makes use of the standard APT package manager for software updates; you can add third-party sources to your subscribed repositories to gain access to more applications. The OS currently provides a limited set of packages, but many Debian wheezy packages work fine on SteamOS.

As you realize SteamOS 1.0 is currently aimed at all those who area already familiar with Linux. Before you download it, have in mind that either of the installation methods - one using a proprietary installer and one the Debian Linux installer - will format everything currently on your PC.

SteamOS and Steam Machines will eventually be compatible with AMD and Intel graphics hardware, but this version lists compatibility for Nvidia GPUs only.

Hardware requirements include an Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor; 4GB or more memory; 500GB or larger disk; NVIDIA graphics card (AMD and Intel graphics support coming soon); UEFI boot support and; a USB port for installation.

For all the brave Linux users out there, here is a SteamOS FAQ and a download link for SteamOS.
