Microsoft to Bring Twitter to Bing Search Engine

Microsoft to Bring Twitter to Bing Search Engine

Enterprise & IT Jul 3,2009 0

Starting from today, when Bing users search for specific queries related to posts made by prominent users of Twitter, they will see their latest Tweets come up in real time on Microsoft Bing's search results. Microsoft said that it did not plan to index all of Twitter and make it searchable, just "some of the more prominent and prolific Twitterers from a variety of spheres" such as former vice president Al Gore.

"Today we're unveiling an initial foray into integrating more real time data into our search results, starting with some of the more prominent and prolific Twitterers from a variety of spheres. This includes Tweets from folks from our own search technology and business sphere like Danny Sullivan or Kara Swisher as well as those from spheres of more general consumer appeal like Al Gore or Ryan Seacrest," Sean Suchter, General Manager, Search Technology Center, Silicon Valley wrote at Bing's blog.

For example, when users search for specific names in association with Twitter, they will l see their latest Tweets come up in real time on Bing's search results. The answer will also include that person's latest Tweets, along with a link to "See more tweets" from that individual.

Microsoft replaced its previous search engine with Bing in late May in a bid to compete with search market leader Google and number two Yahoo.

Bing has increased its share of the Web-search market two weeks in a row, accoriding to research data released by ComScore Inc.. Bing's share of U.S. queries rose 0.8 of a percentage point to 12.1 percent in the week ended June 12, after jumping more than 2 percentage points the previous week, according to ComScore.
