Ubuntu Edge Smartphone Campaign Fails To Raise Goal Amount

Ubuntu Edge Smartphone Campaign Fails To Raise Goal Amount

Smartphones Aug 22,2013 0

Canonical's campaign for the develeompent of the open-source Ubuntu-based Edge smartphone did not work well and the amount raised for the project fell short the company's initial expectations. The initial idea was to rais $32 million through crowdfunding. Canonical raised just $12,809,906, although still, the Edge the world?s biggest ever fixed crowdfunding campaign. Close to 20,000 people believed in the company's vision enough to contribute hundreds of dollars for a phone months in advance, just to help make it happen. Canonical disclosed that Bloomberg LP gave $80,000 and several smaller businesses contributed $7,000 each.

Many members of the Ubuntu community also gave time as well as money, organising their own mailing lists, social media strategies and online ads.

Canonical said that other Ubuntu phones will start to arrive in 2014. In addition, many of the world's biggest mobile networks already signed up to the Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group.

All those who have given money to the project will be refunded through Paypal within five working days.
