Following a recent lock down of overclocking of their mobile GPUs, Nvidia has decided to allow such an action. With the release of the Nvidia R346 drivers (347.09 beta and later), NVIDIA decided to lock down overclocking of their mobile GPUs, saying that overclocking was just a bug introduced into its drivers and that overclocking a mobile GPU could actually damage it mainly due to overheating.

Soon many complains started to appear in Nvidia's online forums by enthusiasts. So Nvidia has decided to be re-enable overclocking with their next driver update, due in March.

"We obsess over every possible optimization so that you can enjoy a perfectly stable machine that balances game, thermal, power, and acoustic performance. Still, many of you enjoy pushing the system even further with overclocking," Nvidia wrote in a blog post.

"Our recent driver update disabled overclocking on some GTX notebooks. We heard from many of you that you would like this feature enabled again. So, we will again be enabling overclocking in our upcoming driver release next month for those affected notebooks."

Those eager to regain this capability right away, can also revert back to driver v.344.75.

Users that take their small laptop and trying to overclock its GPU may be actually asking for trouble. On the other hand, if you have a large gaming notebook with a lot of cooling potential and the system generally doesn't get hot, sure, it’s nice to be able to push the hardware a bit further if you want.
