PeLEDs Could Replace LEDs And OLEDs

PeLEDs Could Replace LEDs And OLEDs

Enterprise & IT Dec 4,2015 0

Lead halide perovskited have great light-emitting properties and have been able to make efficient LEDs that could replace currently used LEDs and organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). Korean and British researchers has developed a perovskite light emitting diode (PeLED) that could replace LED and organic light-emitting diode (OLED). The researchers found that these materials showed remarkably efficient luminescence and have been able to make efficient LEDs (green, red and IR at present) and optically-pumped lasers.

Lead halide perovskited have recently been found to provide unexpectedly efficient thin-film solar cells. The researchers say that the cost of perovskite is just one tenth the cost of OLED materials, and has excellent color purity compared to OLED, realizing clear and natural color.

If commercial production is realized, the new light emitter will be a game changer in the commercial display market dominated by LED and OLED manufacturers.

The research team was led by Lee Tae-woo at POSTECH, in cooperation with Prof. Richard H. Friend at the University of Cambridge, Prof. Im Sang-hyuk at Kyung Hee University, Dr. Lee Chang-lyoul and Dr. Myoung No-soung at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology and Prof. Yoo Seung-hyup at KAIST.

Their research findings were published in Science on Friday.
