Philips released a new verifier tool for checking DVD+RW Video recorders! The tool checks if a disc that is recorded on a DVD+RW Video recorder (or with a DVD+RW authoring application) complies to the DVD and DVD+RW video specifications. It is an easy-to-use tool that provides a pass/fail judgment, a clear summary of the detected errors as well as detailed error information.

Introduction
Flawless playback and interchange are important for the success of the DVD+R/+RW system in the CE world: we expect DVD+R/+RW discs, that are recorded on DVD+RW recorders, can be played correctly on DVD video players and recorded on other DVD+RW recorders.

This compatibility is only fully achieved if the video format on the disc complies with the specifications. The DVD+RW Video Format Compliance Verifier is created to check the real-time video format, DVD-Video format and file system on a disc. The tool gives in-depth error information, but also a pass or fail judgment: if the judgment is fail, this means that the recorder does not meet the minimum compliance requirement, and should be improved. If it is pass, the recorder can write discs with a video format that has a level of quality such that correct playback and interchange is ensured.

A special test is designed to prove that a recorder meets the minimum compliance requirement, the DVD+RW Video Format Compliance Test. In this test, discs are created according to a prescribed procedure, and the discs are tested with the DVD+RW Video Format Compliance Verifier. The procedure covers all kinds of recording and navigation functions, editing, deleting, splitting, overwriting, creation of playlists etc., such that the most important functions are tested with the verifier.

What checks are done?
The Compliance verifier checks the DVD+RW video and the DVD-Video format fully. The MPEG system, Video/audio, AC3, etc is tested on all but the lowest level. The UDF and ISO9660 file systems are checked.

DVD+RW navigation: VRMI
DVD+R open session: RSAT
DVD navigation: VMGI, VTSI, PGCI, navigation commands
DVD private packs: Sub Picture Unit, Data Search Info, Presentation Control Info
MPEG2 system: Pack, system header, PES packet, PES data
MPEG video: sequence headers, GOP headers, Picture headers, Slice headers
UDF and ISO9660 file system, crosschecks

The following is not checked by the DVD+RW Video Format Compliance Verifier:

MPEG video: macroblocks and blocks
Audio streams: MPEG, Dolby AC3, LPCM; IEC-60958*, DTS*, SDDS* UDF: 2nd AVDP
Physical data format* (control data, TOC, DCB?s)
Recording signals*

The items that are not checked can be verified using the DVD+RW Video Format Verifier, except the items marked with an asterisk (*)
