Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud services division is teaming up with Verizon Communications Inc. to offer a 5G service that will push computing power closer to customers and enable a new generation of video gaming, robotic controls and car automation.
Verizon is the first technology company in the world to offer 5G network edge computing, and will use AWS’s new service, AWS Wavelength, to provide developers the ability to deploy applications that require ultra-low latency to mobile devices using 5G.
The companies are currently piloting AWS Wavelength on Verizon’s edge compute platform, 5G Edge, in Chicago for a select group of customers, including video game publisher Bethesda Softworks and the National Football League (NFL). Additional deployments are planned in other locations across the U.S. in 2020.
The rollout of 5G is limited so far to parts of a few dozen cities, and full-fledged coverage isn’t expected for several years.
