AMD Releases New Radeon HD 7950 GPU
AMD today announced the release of the Radeon HD 7950
graphics card, built on the latest AMD 28nm Radeon
HD7950 "Tahiti PRO" GPU with PCI Express Gen 3
support.
The new card is based on AMD's Graphics Core Next
architecture, which is adopted for the company's
previously announced Radeon HD 7970 model.
Compared to the HD 7970, the HD 7950 features less
stream processors (1,792) and the same number of ROPs.
The GPU's core clock will be 800MHz or higher, depending on the implementation. It has 112 texture units, 3GB GDDR5 memory (384bit memory bus) and its theoretical computate performance is 2.87 TFLOPS.
The card is powered by 2x 6-pin power supply pins and has a max power consumption of 200W. Back to the front of the card the is a single DL-DVI port, along with an HDMI port and 2 miniDP ports all along a single slot.
AMD Radeon HD 7000 series GPU roadmap
With Radeon HD 7950 and HD 7970 now retailing, AMD will start shipping the remaining HD 7000 family GPUs - "Pitcairn," "Cape Verde" and "New Zealand" later this year.
Next up in AMD's release schedule is Cape Verde, which are expected to appear in the Radeon HD 7750 and HD 7770 next month. Cape Verde is expected to feature 896 SP over 14 CUs and 56 TMU, with a core frequency of 900 MHz in the HD 7770 SKU. HD 7750 will come with 1 CU disabled for a total of 832 SP and 52 TMU. The Cape Verde die will also feature a 128-bit interface.
The "Pitcairn" GPUs are expectde to appear sometime in March, with the Radeon HD 7850 and HD 7870. Pitcairn will feature 1408 SP/22 CU/ 88 TMU.
Last but certainly not least, the "New Zealand' dual-GPU is slated for an early Q2 2012 release. New Zealand will be branded HD 7990 and is expected to become AMD's fastest graphics card.
