Apple May Buy Stake in Renesas Chip Design Unit: report
Apple is in talks to buy Renesas Electronics' stake in Renesas SP Drivers, a company that designs LCD chips for iPhones for about 50 billion yen, the Nikkei reported on Tuesday.
Renesas SP Drivers is a joint venture established by Renesas Electronics, Sharp Corporation and Powerchip Group in April 2008. It engages in the business of LCD Drivers that drive small and mid-sized LCD panels. Renesas currently owns 55 percent stake in Renesas SP Drivers while Sharp owns 25 percent.
Apple expects to complete the stake purchase by summer, the business daily reported.
Renesas says that the reports were not based on Renesas' announcement and they cannot be confirmed or regarded as fact, at least for now.
Renesas has been trying to offload its chip making business as the company faces competition from companies such as Samsung.
