Blu-ray MDisc Medium Promises 'Lifetime Of Storage'

Blu-ray MDisc Medium Promises 'Lifetime Of Storage'

Optical Storage Jan 7,2013 0

Millenniata will offer a Blu-ray version of its MDisc high-quality optical disc in June. Millenniata has developed the new 25GB Blu-ray disc with Ritek. The disc promises to keep data fresh long after it might have decayed on other discs and will join the company's MDisc DVDs already offered by the company.

The Millenniata discs use a proprietary storage layer to record data and the company claims that the new Blu-ray disc will maintain its readability over periods significantly longer than conventional optical dye-based media.

Ritek has begun production of M-DISC DVD discs and is Millenniata's sole licensed maker for the Blu-ray M-DISC, Through cooperation with Millenniata, Ritek will market M-DISC DVD and Blu-ray discs under dual brands.

Millenniata's currently available DVDs are available in the U.S. in a 10 pack for $30 and a 20 pack for $58. Since a higher laser power is required to burn data on them, a special firmware is required for the DVD burners. Currently, only M-DISC compatible drives can write to the DVD version of M-DISC, but it can be read in any DVD drive. LG Electronics offers an affordable M-Ready optical drive. Additionally, Acer, Inc. is now offering the M-DISC compatible Hitachi LG Data Storage (HLDS) DVD and Blu-ray optical drives in Acer computers. The M-DISC Ready drives are also available on the recently launched M series of notebooks under Acer's Aspire range. Hitachi-LG Data Storage, Inc. (HLDS) manufactures the M-DISC compatible drives in partnership with Millenniata.

Millenniata says that the upcoming Blu-ray product will not require a special firmware change.

Pricing for the Blu-ray Discs was not announced.
