Facebook Wants To Further Expand Social Networking Experience
Virtual reality, artificial intelligence and drones are areas that Facebook is investing in order to create a more useful social network. During Facebook's F8 annual developer conference in San Franciso, Facebook executives on Thursday said that virtual reality headsets such as the Oculus Rift could transform how people communicate on Facebook, they said.
Facebook acquired reality headset maker Oculus last year for $2 billion.
Oculus Rift could be used for video games and entertainment, but also for shooting videos and uploading them to Facebook. But still, Facebook did not clarify when we should expect the commercial availability ofthe headset -- it said the Oculus headset will be released "before long".
Facebook has also fired aerospace experts and has recently conducted the first test flight of a solar-powered drone prototype, which would fly over remote parts of the world in very high altitudes (90,000 feet) and offer internet connectivity to ground residents.
In addition, Facebook's artificial intelligence group is already planning for new users by developing technology to help them cope with the surge in messages and photos on the social network.
