Google To Fiber Service to Provo, Utah

Google To Fiber Service to Provo, Utah

Enterprise & IT Apr 18,2013 0

After announcing its expansion to Austin, Texas, last week, Google on Wednesday said that it hopes to also bring Fiber, its high-speed Internet service, to Provo, Utah. Google is hoping the Provo City Council will approve an acquisition agreement between it and iProvo, a fiber optic network the city began building in 2004. Provo has been looking for a partner since 2011 to finish building out the network.

As a part of the acquisition, Google would commit to upgrade the network to gigabit technology and finish network construction so that every home along the existing iProvo network would have the opportunity to connect to Google Fiber. Google will pay $1 under a deal.

If the deal is approved and the acquisition closes, Gogle would offer its Free Internet service (5 Mbps speeds) to every home along the existing Provo network, for a $30 activation fee and no monthly charge for at least seven years. The company would also offer Google Fiber Gigabit Internet - up to 100x faster Internet than today's average broadband speeds - and the option for Google Fiber TV service with hundreds of channels. Google would also provide free Gigabit Internet service to 25 local public institutions like schools, hospitals and libraries.

The Provo City Council vote is scheduled for April 23, according to Google, and the company is pushing hard to get the acquisition approved.
