Google Outlines The Gifts We're Searching For This Holiday
Google says that than half of holiday shoppers say they plan to use their smartphones in free moments throughout the day to get their holiday list done. The search giant also looked at the top gifts trending on Google Search for Cyber Monday. According to Google's data, drones are no longer expensive playthings for the tech-savvy. Search for "toy drone" returns easy-to-use devices available from department stores and toy stores. Google says that shopping searches for drones are up 80% over the past year, and they’re highest in California. Hoverboards are also trending: While we’re on the topic of electronic toys, hoverboards are so popular this year they’ve even overtaken searches for drones. Searches for "hoverboards" started trending in the summer and are up more than 500% since July.
Holiday onesies are the new "ugly Christmas sweaters": Last year "ugly Christmas sweaters" were all the rage. This year we’re seeing holiday onesies are the new kitsch partywear of choice, as searches for "adult onesies" are trending even faster than searches for "ugly Christmas sweater."
Looking at this year’s top-trending apparel list you’ll be forgiven for thinking we’ve gone back to the 90s. Not only have we seen searches for 90s fashion trends - bomber jackets, Levi jeans, Adidas Superstars - more than double over the past year, each city has their own 90s fashion item of choice - shoppers in Chicago are more interested in Levis while shoppers in New York are on the hunt for Adidas Superstar shoes.
"Smart" devices top electronics searches: With more models on the market than ever, both smart watches and smart TVs topped Google's list of trending electronics this year - with "smart watch" searches seeing a particularly phenomenal growth, up nearly 300% compared to last year. But as smart devices get more popular, retro electronics are also making a comeback: searches for instant cameras like "Polaroid Camera" and "Fujifilm Instax" have been rising steadily in popularity each holiday season.
Cyber Monday Online Sales Seen Rising
Online sales on Cyber Monday may rise at least 18 percent from a year earlier, slower growth than during the holiday weekend as consumers started their Internet shopping earlier, according to forecasts by IBM.
Total Web-based sales for Saturday and Sunday increased by 26 percent from a year earlier, IBM said in a report early Monday. That compares with a 17 percent gain over the same weekend in 2014 and an 8.5 percent increase on Monday that year. Cyber Monday spending may hit a record $3 billion this year, according to Adobe.
Some of the most popular items on weekend shopping lists included televisions from Samsung Electronics, Sony and LG Electronics, as well as the Apple Watch and Beats by Dre headphones, according to IBM’s Watson Trend app. Other popular choices are hoverboards, Nike running shoes, Activision Blizzard Inc.’s Skylanders video-game series and Star Wars R2-D2 droids.
Thanksgiving was the fastest-growing online shopping day, with sales rising 25 percent to a record $1.7 billion, according to Adobe. About 37 percent of Thanksgiving sales came from smartphones and tablets, up from 29 percent in 2014, according to Adobe. Online spending on Black Friday increased 14 percent from 2014.
Over the weekend, smartphones were the preferred method of online purchases, according to IBM, driving 19 percent of Internet sales, up 66 percent from last year. That compares with 18 percent of buys made on tablets. But the value of merchandise was higher for purchases made on tablets, with the average order hitting $140.70, exceeding desktop purchases averaging $138.30, and smartphone buys of $111.29, according to IBM.
