Huawei Executive Confirms Development of New OS to Replace Android

Huawei Executive Confirms Development of New OS to Replace Android

Smartphones Dec 1,2018 2

The rumors that had been implying that Huawei is secretly working on a smartphone operating system (OS) to topple the Android market proved correct.

Huawei Product VP, Bruce Lee, confirmed that his company is developing an operating system that will replace Android. He made the comments on its Weido account.

It is not clear whether Huawei will use the new OS for its own devices, or it would also try to promote it to other Chinese smartphone makers.

Huawei is already using its own silicon (SoCs) in its smartphones and tablets, produced by HiSilicon, a Huawei subsidiary. Recently, the company launched its first 7nm Kirin 980 processor to compete with the Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.

Huawei is also said to be testing its recent smartphones with Google's new FuchsiaOS. Fuchsia is a capability-based operating system currently developed by Google. It first became known to the public when the project appeared on GitHub in August 2016. In contrast to prior Google-developed operating systems such as Chrome OS and Android, which are based on Linux kernels, Fuchsia is based on a new microkernel called "Zircon". With the new OS, Google's goal is to make a "universal" OS compatible with everything - from embedded systems to smartphones, tablets and personal computers.

    You incorrectly state:

clearly states that HiSilicon is a fabless company!
