Kickstarter and Forbes Websites Hacked

Kickstarter and Forbes Websites Hacked

Enterprise & IT Feb 16,2014 0

Kickstarter and Forbes suffered a data breach that may have led to the disclosure of personal information, the companies disclosed on Saturday. Forbes.com said it was targeted in a digital attack and its publishing platform was compromised, meaning that the email address for anyone registered with Forbes.com may have been exposed. Although the passwords were encrypted, the company strongly encourages its readers to change their them.

The attack was orchestrated by the Syrian Electronic Army group, which claims that the list contains login credentials for 1 million users.

The attackers also gained access to Forbes' publishing system, altering asome stories on the publication's website.

Forbes said it had notified law enforcement about the breach.

Seperately, Kickstarter, the fundraising platform used by people to raise capital for creative projects and businesses, said on Saturday that hackers had gained access to some of its customers' data earlier this week but that the breach had been repaired.

According to Kickstarter CEO Yancey Strickler, no credit card data of any kind was accessed by hackers, but usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and encrypted passwords were exposed.

As a precaution, the company recommends that you create a new password for your Kickstarter account, and other accounts where you use this password.

Kickstarter said it had beefed up security in recent days. It also said it was working with law enforcement officials.

Recent data breaches at Target and Neiman Marcus have sparked concern from U.S. lawmakers and consumers over who should bear the cost of consumer losses and how to improve cybersecurity.

Earlier his week, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced that it would host a roundtable to discuss cybersecurity and the issues and challenges it raised for market participants and public companies, and how they were addressing those concerns.
