LG To Work With Intel on 14nm Mobile SoC: report

LG To Work With Intel on 14nm Mobile SoC: report

Smartphones Oct 23,2015 0

A Korean newspaper reports that LG Electronics has been cooperating with Intel to develop their own smartphone processor, which will be based on Intel's 14-nanometer FinFET technology. So far, LG has been mainly using SoCs from Qualcomm for its smartphones, while rival Samsung has designed and equipped some of its devices with its own Exynos chips, based on the ARM architecture.

LG's response was the Nuclun Apliication Processor (AP) , which has eight cores (4x Cortex-A72 clocked at 2.1 GHz plus 4x Cortex-A53 clocked at 1.5 GHz), which is said to be produced by TSMC using 16-nm FinFET technology. However, it is not clear when this chip will be available, reportedly due to issues related to the integration of the LTE-A modem into the SoC.

Could the Nuclun 2 eventually been made by Intel packing the XMM 7360 LTE-A modem (450 Mbit/s ) inside? Or the report from the Korea Economic Daily refers to a futrure copperation of LG with Intel?

The Nuclun 2 chip is supposed to enter mass production in the first half of next year.
