Lite-On IT gaining ground in South Korea optical drive market
Lite-On IT, Taiwan’s largest computer drive maker, is grabbing share in the clone PC market in South Korea with its low-price appeals, the Seoul-based Electronic Times reported. It has sold 19,000 DVD-ROM drives, CD-RW drives and CD-ROM drives there since it started distribution operations in May, and plans to offer 40x CD-RW drives in August.
Dominant players Samsung and LG Electronics, to counter challenges from Lite-On, have cut prices on their 32x CD-RW and low-speed DVD-ROM drive products and beefed up their after-sales service. Lite-On’s products are normally priced at least 10% lower than those offered by South Korean companies, the report said.
