Memory-Tech Develops Production System For CBHD Discs
Memory-Tech Corporation (MTC) has completed the development of a system for production, authoring and replication of the CBHD (China Blue High Definition) discs.
As a member of the DVD Forum and one of the main supporters of CBHD, which is a candidate high-definition format for China, Memory-Tech also joined the CHDA (China High-definition DVD industry Association), which is the Chinese organization responsible for the development of the CBHD. CHDA is actually the counter part of the DVD Forum in China.
The company announced today that it has completed the development of the complete production process for the CBHD Disc. MTC is now offering a complete CBHD Disc production system in their joint venture company, Shanghai United Optical Disc Co., Ltd . (UOD).
Hit by global recession, the Chinese Government has been trying to increase domestic production as well as the demand for Chinese-made products. Such an action is the promotion and the development of the next generation optical disc industry and the standardization of a new high definition DVD format in China.
The CBHD Format was developed by OMNERC (Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center, organized mainly with the members of Tsinghua University) and the Third Institute (China Electronics Technology Group Corporation No.3 Research Institute) under the technical cooperation of the DVD Forum. Thus, the CBHD is an open format controlled and managed by CHDA. Media-Tech said that the CBHD Format would become an industrial standard by April of this year and it also expected to become a national standard in China by the Q3 of 2009.
CBHD will not only be protected by the AACS copy protection schemes also used by the Blu-ray Disc format, but it will also implement a new Chinese protection system, which will be developed in China independently.
The structure of the CBHD Disc make it highly compatible with the existing DVD Disc allowing Chinese DVD disc manufacturers to easily produce CBHD discs with simple upgrades of their current DVD production systems. Moreover, the CBHD Players are expected to retail in China priced significantly lower than competing HD players such as the BD players. Currently, the LSI units for the new CBHD players have been completely developed and they are massively produced, MTC claims. Chinese AV manufacturers including TCL and Shinco have been developing CBHD players and they will launch them in China next month.
CBHD has recently earned the support of Warner Bros, which will release films in the CBHD format this year.
UOD (Shanghai United Optical Disc Co., Ltd.) is a company established by MTC and CRC (China Record Shanghai Corporation), a Music and Video Company directly controlled by the Chinese Government. UOD is a major replicator of CD and DVD discs with a top market share in China. MTC said that it was planning to invest in new production lines for the CBHD discs, run by UOD.
In addition to UOD, MTC and CRC established together the CBC (CRC/BMB Audio Visual Co., Ltd.), a post-production company for compiling and authoring CBHD Discs in China. CBC has already completed 5 CBHD Chinese movie titles and more than 20 additional films are currently under production.
